Hotel History

The Municipal Hotel & Spa Liverpool occupies the city’s magnificent Grade II* listed Municipal Buildings on Dale Street, in the heart of Liverpool city centre. One of Liverpool’s most distinctive historic landmarks, the building combines Gothic, classical and French architectural influences. Historic England describes it as being of “vast scale and high-quality eclectic design”, reflecting Liverpool’s prosperity and international significance as a major port city. Inside, decorative vaulted and coffered ceilings, intricate friezes and marble fireplaces featuring Liver birds and Queen Victoria showcase the exceptional craftsmanship and civic pride of the former Liverpool Corporation headquarters.

Available on Tuesdays and Thursdays, subject to availability, each tour explores the Municipal Buildings’ historic architecture, carefully preserved original features and transformation from council offices into a luxury five-star hotel in Liverpool.

The Municipal Buildings served as Liverpool council offices until 2017 before being carefully transformed into a luxury five-star hotel. Many original features have been thoughtfully preserved, including vintage telephones, library-style desk doors, the restored heritage lift and the landmark clock tower. Fascinating objects discovered during the renovation—including an old boot and love letters hidden within the walls—offer further glimpses into the building’s remarkable past. Today, The Municipal Hotel & Spa Liverpool brings together historic architecture, modern luxury and authentic local character, offering guests the opportunity to experience an important part of Liverpool’s heritage.
